BLM Camping and Boondocking

Check the BLM’s Web site for the location of their local or regional offices. It is worth paying them a visit for the wealth of information they can provide. Southwestern deserts often have a lot more to offer than most people at first realize.

If you are new to the desert, ask questions. That is what the rangers and office personnel are there for. They will be able to direct you to rockhounding areas, riparian areas for wildlife and bird watching, palm oases, historic sites, old mines and mining camps, wildflower areas and estimated bloom times, hiking trails, off road trails, LTVA and boondocking areas, and campgrounds. And pick up a good desert book, like Audubon’s Deserts book, that will give you a good overview of the desert and its inhabitants, flowers, seasonal weather, how to cope with the desert climate, and other good stuff.
